Bronwen Colquhoun

Senior Curator of Photography
National Museum Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom
Bronwen Colquhoun has recently taken up the post of Senior Curator of Photography at National Museum Wales. The Museum was founded in 1907 and holds approximately 500,000 photographs across disciplines ranging from art to social and industrial history.

Prior to this role, Bronwen was Assistant Curator of Photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 2015 she was awarded her PhD in Museum and Heritage Studies from Newcastle University. Her thesis examined how photo-sharing website, Flickr, The Commons, supports community engagement and builds new knowledge and meaning around historic photographic collections. Her research interests broadly focus on the impact of digital and social media technologies on photographic theory and practice.

At the V&A, Bronwen cared for the National Collection of the Art of Photography, which comprised approximately 500,000 photographs dating from the beginnings of photography to the present day. She worked on a number of exhibitions including A History of Photography: Series and Sequences (2015); Staying Power: Photographs of Black British Experience 1950s to 1990s (2015); and The Camera Exposed (2016). She contributed a chapter to the publication, "The Versatile Image: Photography, Digital Technologies and the Internet" (Leuven University Press, 2014), and has written for journals including the British Journal of Photography and Art Quarterly.

As a portfolio reviewer, Bronwen is able to offer a curator's perspective and give advice on promoting work in the UK. She is interested in reviewing artistic and documentary photography that is innovative and well presented. She is especially interested in reviewing work that incorporates new media technologies or has a focus on reappropriation, and work that challenges or re-interprets traditional modes of presentation and display. Bronwen is less interested in reviewing commercial, nature or fashion photography.
