Meeting Place Reviewers

Sarah Hermanson Meister

Curator, Department of Photography
The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, USA
Sarah Meister became a curator at MoMA in 2009, having started in the Department of Photography as a curatorial assistant in 1997. Recent exhibitions include From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola (2015; co-curator), Nicholas Nixon: Forty Years of the Brown Sisters (2014), Walker Evans American Photographs, Seventy-Fifth Anniversary (2013-14) and Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light (2013), each with accompanying catalogues. She writes for and edits a variety of Museum and external publications including most recently Photography at MoMA: 1960 to Now (2015).

She is most interested in reviewing work with an individual and clearly articulated point of view, whether that work relates to photography’s documentary/artistic histories, conceptual practices or more experimental traditions. She is not interested in seeing work by photographers whose only goal is to have their work represented in MoMA’s collection. However, as a museum curator she can be helpful in identifying unique strengths of specific achievements, in editing and sequencing, in exploring strategies of display (the relationship between form and content), and in discussing the ways in which particular photographs relate to aspects of the medium’s past and, perhaps, its future.
