Itala Schmelz

Itala Schmelz (Mexico City, 1968) is Director of Centro de la Imagen, starting October 2013. Since the 1990's this space has been at the forefront of photographic practices in Mexico and Latin America. In October 2015 the space reopen it doors after an important restructuration and with a renew International Photography Festival: Foto México. Schmelz Philosophy major and graduated in 1992, has been devoted to curatorial practice and critique both in modern and contemporary art. In 2013 she was appointed curator of the Mexican Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennial, where she presented Cordiox by Ariel Guzik. Her essays have been published in many specialized art publications and magazines, amongst which Luna Córnea.

Following her interest in the collective imaginaries of modernity, specifically regarding ideas of the future, she created a Festival and published book “El Futuro Más Acá” (2003-2007). The first serious study focused on Mexican Science Fiction Films, an event with great international acclaim where forgotten films were screened with new copies. More recently, she published "Luis Márquez, In the World of Tomorrow" about a witty Mexican photographer and his adventures in the New York World Fair in 1939-40. Furthermore, she directed the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros (2001-2007) and the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (2007-2011), venues where she designed, with great success, multiple programs to support, conceptualize and promote contemporary art in Mexico.
