Howard Bossen

Adjunct Photography Curator, Michigan State University Museum
Professor of Photography and Visual Communication, School of Journalism
Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA
Howard Bossen is a professor of photography and visual communication in the School of Journalism at Michigan State and the adjunct photography curator at the Michigan State University Museum (MSU Museum).

Mr. Bossen has curated several exhibitions that grew out of meeting photographers at FotoFest and published articles that deal with the works of photographers he first met at FotoFest. Detroit Resurgent, a book he co-edited and was published in 2014, features the portraits of Gilles Perrin whom he met at FotoFest. He also is the author of the books Luke Swank: Modernist Photographer and Henry Holmes Smith: Man of Light.

Mr. Bossen is interested in looking at all kinds of work: color and black and white, documentary and photojournalism, modern, post-modern, conceptual, etc. He is especially interested in artist made books and work that explores the intersection of art and culture and art and science, the primary missions of the MSU Museum. He prefers not to review advertising and commercial work. He will be looking for artist made books for possible acquisition by Special Collections in the MSU Library, work for inclusion in exhibitions at the MSU Museum and photographers to invite to the university to lecture or conduct workshops. He can provide curatorial insight on portfolios and advice on how to strengthen them.
