Joaquim Paiva, a Brazilian photographer and photography collector, has been collecting contemporary photography since 1978. His collection is made up by the works of Brazilian (2600 images by 245 professionals) and international photographers (515 prints by 150 photographers). The collection comprises a wide range of themes and techniques and has been exhibited in Brazil and abroad, such as in Buenos Aires in 1997, Houston FotoFest 1998, Lima 1999, Paris-Fondation Cartier 2001, São Paulo 2002 running parallel to the São Paulo International Biennial, Nice-France 2005 and the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro (last show in 2014). Nearly 2/3 of Mr. Paiva’s collection (1963 images) are already part of the collection of MAM. The first donation having taken place in 2005, and new bodies of work added in 2011 and 2013.

Mr. Paiva has been a reviewer at FotoFest since 2000. He has also reviewed at Buenos Aires’ Encuentros Abiertos, FotoRio and PhotoEspaña in Madrid, among others. Mr. Paiva has been a jury for the on-line Critical Mass international photography contest organized by PhotoLucida, Portland, Oregon, USA, since 2005. He is also reviewing on-line for PhotoVisa, Moscow, Russia, in 2015.

He exhibited his own work on Brazil´s capital city, Brasilia, in April/May, 2010. Part of it was shown at IVAM, Valencia, Spain, in 2011, as well as in Mexico City, where the Centro de la Imagen owns 140 of his prints. Mr. Paiva will exhibit this work at the Maison Européene de la Photographie, Paris, in the summer of 2016.

Mr. Paiva has followed the international photography and art scene since the 1970´s, lectures on photography and curates exhibitions mostly on his collection and lived in seven countries, including the US.

Mr. Paiva is interested in reviewing most types of work, particularly fine art photography, experimental and creative bodies of work in which the photographer is committed to quality, innovative and contemporary issues. Besides offering critique and providing advice on the photographer´s work, Mr. Paiva will consider acquiring photographs for his collection.
