La Fábrica is a private enterprise focused on promoting the development of contemporary culture by means of proposals characterized by their high quality and awareness of society’s needs. It was created in 1994. La Fábrica is the organizer of PHotoEspaña (PHE), International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts, which takes place every year in Madrid from June-August.

Oliva María Rubio holds a doctorate in History and Theory of Art from Madrid’s Autonomous University. Before being named Artistic director at La Fábrica in 2014, she was Director of Exhibitions 2004-2013 and General Curator of PHotoEspaña (PHE), where she programmed approximately 60 exhibitions (2001-2003). Some of her curatorial projects include: On the Other Side, with Michal Rovner, Efrat Shvily, Didier Ben Loulou, Matei Glass (Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, 2003); Kimsooja: To Breathe – A Mirror Woman (Palacio de Cristal - MNCARS, Madrid, 2006); Andres Serrano: Salt on the Wound (Artium in Vitoria, Tecla Sala Barcelona, PAC in Milan and CBA in Madrid, 2006); Stellar Moments: 20th Century Photography (CBA and Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, 2006-2007), Lynn Davis (Museo Thyssen Bornemisza for PHE07, Madrid); Affinity Paths: Ten Spanish Photographers (Museo de Arte de Cantón and Yonshe Museum in Bejing, 2008); Brassaï: Graffiti (CBA, Madrid, 2008); László Moholy-Nagy: The Art of Light, (CBA in Madrid, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and Ludwig Museum – Contemporary Art Museum in Budapest, 2010-2011); Margaret Bourke-White: Moments in History, 2013-2014 (Martin-Gropius –Bau Berlin, Preus Museum Horten-Oslo, Fotomuseum-Gemeentemuseum Den Haag); El Lissitzky: The Experience of Totality, 2014 (MART Rovereto-Trento, Museo Picasso Málaga, Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera, Barcelona).

Ms. Maria Rubio has been juror for the Spanish National Photography Award (Madrid, 2000, 2007), European Award for Women Photographers (Prato, 2002), L’Oreal Award at the Pingyao International Festival of Photography (2002), Grand Prix International de Photographie Ville de Vevey (2004); The Albert Renger-Patzsch Photography Award (Essen, 2006); Purificación García Photography Award (Madrid, 2008); Grand Prix Henri Cartier-Bresson (Paris, 2009); Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010/Photogrpaher’s Gallery (London, 2010) among others. She was member of the Visual Arts Committee for the European Commission, (Brussels, 2003), Acquisition Committee for the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain – FNAC (Paris, 2004-2006), and artistic advisor for the Prix HSBC pour la Photograhie (Paris, 2005). Ms. Maria Rubio is the author of La mirada interior. El surrealismo y la pintura (Madrid, Tecnos, 1994), and her essays appear in catalogues, magazines and newspapers.

Ms. Maria Rubio is interested in looking at documentary and art photography. She does not wish to see fashion, advertising or travel photography. Ms. Maria Rubio can offer advice on how to complete or improve works in progress as well as suggestions for presenting projects. She can also propose work for the PHotoEspaña exhibition program; as well as propose work for the magazines that La Fábrica publishes: Ojodepez (documentary photography magazine) and Matador. She is also looking for work for La Fabrica’s gallery exhibition program.
