Artist Bio

Diana Matar is an artist working in photography, testimony, and archive. Her bodies of work investigate issues of history, memory, and state-sponsored violence. She holds a M.A. from the Royal College of Art, London, graduating with distinction in 2008. Matar received the Deutsche Bank’s Pyramid Award for Fine Art in 2008; a grant from Fifty Crows International Fund for Documentary Photography in 2003; and two Individual Artist grants from the Arts Council England. She was nominated for Prix Pictet award in photography and sustainability in 2010, and again in 2015. She is based in London and New York. Matar’s current work, Evidence, was published as a monograph by Schilt Publishing, Amsterdam, in late 2014 and earned a place on the “best books of the year” lists of The New Yorker, The Daily Telegraph, London, and The Independent, London. Works from Evidence were exhibited at Tate Modern, London, in 2014–2015; Museum Folkswang, Essen, Germany, in 2015; Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, Germany, in 2015; Paris Photo in 2014 and 2015; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, in 2015-2016; and Rick Wester Fine Art, New York, in 2015. In 2016 Evidence will be shown at FotoFest 2016 Biennial, Houston, and at Purdy Hicks, Gallery, London. Matar’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Deutsche Bank Collection, Frankfurt; Harry Ransom Center, Austin, Texas; and numerous private collections.
