Born in Austin, Texas in 1975 and raised in Ames, Iowa, Laurel Nakadate received her B.F.A. from
the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1998) and completed her M.F.A. at Yale University
(2001). Since then, twenty solo exhibitions of her photographs, films, and video have taken place
at museums and galleries throughout the U.S., Europe, and Australia including an acclaimed ten year
survey, Laurel Nakadate: Only the Lonely (2011), at MoMA PS 1, Long Island City, New York.
She has participated in group shows at Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and
Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, Germany; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea
di Roma (MACRO), Italy and other major institutions.
Nakadate’s works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum
of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington,
D.C., and others.
