Artist Bio

Robert Harding Pittman received his M.F.A. in photography and film/video at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, after earning his M.S. at the University of California, Berkeley, in environmental engineering, an area of concern that continues to inform his work. His main interest is how different cultures interact with the environment and how they manage “development.”

Anonymization (Heidelberg, Germany: Kehrer Verlag, 2012), a photographic study of worldwide urban sprawl, was nominated for the Prix Pictet and a German PhotoBook Award, and it has received wide media attention. His award-winning documentaries, which address many of the same issues treated in Anonymization, have been shown at festivals around the world. Currently, together with actor and activist Martin Sheen, he is working with CFF Films in Germany on a new documentary film, From Under Our Feet, about people across the globe who are being displaced by open-pit coal mining. His photographs and documentary films have been exhibited internationally and are in public and private collections.
