Artist Bio

Seeking the solitude of deserts and the abandoned architectures of ancient cultures, Elaine Ling explores the shifting equilibrium between nature and the human-made across four continents. Her photographs, widely exhibited and published, are in the permanent collections of numerous museums and private collections, including those of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, Germany; Museet for Fotokunst, Odense, Denmark; Centro Português de Fotografia, Porto, Portugal; International Center of Photography–Scavi Scaligeri, Verona, Italy; Musée de la Photographie à Charleroi, Belgium; Fototeca de Cuba, Havana; Lishui Photography Museum, China; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona Beach, Florida; Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; and Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa. Her international publications include work in View Camera, Photo Technique International, The Polaroid Book (Cologne: Taschen, 2005), Zoom magazine (Italian edition), Orion Magazine, Viktor Mag, BMJ [British Medical Journal], and Aperture. Her photographs are published in two books- Mongolia: Land of the Deer Stone (Revere, Pa.: Lodima Press, 2009) and Talking Stones: A Photographic Sojourn (Heidelberg, Germany: Kehrer Verlag, 2015), including photographs taken over thirty years. When she is not photographing, Ling practices family medicine in Toronto and plays cello in Orchestra Toronto, a community orchestra.
