Artist Bio

Hassan Meer was born in Muscat, the capital city of the Sultanate of Oman, in 1972. He continues to live and work there. He received his M.F.A (2000) and a B.F.A with specialization in media art (1999) from Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia. During his studies, he began using video and installation art to express his ideas, which are rooted in personal experience, childhood memories, and an impressionable sense of spirituality. In 2005, he collaborated with other artists to initiate a project that led to the Circle Group series of exhibitions, intended to encourage multimedia art in Oman and the Middle East. His work has been presented in many local and international exhibitions. Meer is inspired by the changes in one’s cultural identity, studying individual identity in relation to a collective experience through his installation works. His work is also a contemplation and investigation into the spiritual domain and the magic rituals bequeathed to us from ancient times that have established themselves so profoundly in our society. It narrates his pondering of death and human mortality, and examines prevalent local rituals. During the fall of 2012, Meer was an artist-in-residence at the Delfina Foundation, London. His work has appeared in the 8th Sharjah International Biennale, U.A.E. (2013); Arab Express (2012), Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Work Marry Remember (2012), AB Gallery, Zurich; Reflections (2013), Stal Gallery, Muscat, Oman; FotoFest Biennial (2014), Houston; and All Silent for the Buzzing (2014), Royal College of Art Galleries, Kensington Gore, London. His work is in many public and private collections in Oman and abroad.
