Artist Bio

Gregory Maiofis, born in 1970 in St. Petersburg, comes from a family of artists and architects. His father is the well-known graphic artist Mikhail Maiofis, who encouraged his son’s skill at drawing, which became apparent early in life. He attended the Repin Fine Arts Academy in St. Petersburg for two years where he studied the old Old Masters before leaving to pursue personal projects in oil painting.

In 1989, his family moved to the United States. Two years prior to his family’s move, Maiofis created his first serious body of work, dealing with subjects in politics and art, which marked a turning point in his artistic career. He followed his family to the United States in 1991.

Maiofis has had solo exhibitions across Russia, Europe, and the United States since 1993. His work is in many museum collections including those of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Moscow Museum of Modern Art; Novy Museum, St. Petersburg; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; The State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow; Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow; Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro; and Slovenská národná galéria, Bratislava. Maiofis’s series Proverbs, an ongoing series of photographs in which the artist focuses on universal truths, was published by Nazraeli Press, Paso Robles, California, in 2014.
