Artist Bio

Kurt Tong was born in Hong Kong in 1977. After several years of working as a documentary photographer, he earned a M.A. in documentary photography at the London College of Communication in 2006. He then began working on much more personal projects, drawing on his Chinese heritage and familial relationships for inspiration. Much of Tong’s recent work has moved towards installation. Echoed Visions made its debut at the Identity Art Gallery, Hong Kong, in 2014, and his Pondering Tree is a permanent installation within an ancient park in Zhongshan, China. In recognition for his recent work, he has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Jerwood Photography Award. Tong’s photographs have been widely published and exhibited internationally. His first monograph is In Case It Rains in Heaven (Heidelberg, Germany: Kehrer Verlag, 2011). Tong’s work was exhibited at FotoFest’s International Discoveries II in 2009.
