Pablo Lopez Luz (Mexico)


The Terrazo series came about as a personal necessity.I wanted to fully portray the consequences of the erratic urban spread of Mexico City across the landscape and to convey the social, political, and ecological significance of this transformation. Ina megalopolis like Mexico City, a place constantly threatened by its incessant population growth and its lack of infrastructure, the complex relationship between people and their living space is very visible.The once bare and unpopulated mountain valley shave been overtaken by urban spread and houses,dictated by a struggling social class that fills the natural space as quickly as a spreading pool of water, untroubled by the consequences of this indiscriminate growth. The people living in these cities are quickly losing their connection to the natural surroundings,enclosing themselves in walls of concrete.

The photographs were taken in two geographically different locations, Mexico City and Acapulco. Both cities share the problems of the contemporary megacity: overconsumption of natural resources, economic disparity, social unrest, overcrowding, underemployment, crime, and pollution, among many other things. In this new society of disorder, there seems to be a constant threat of imminent collapse. The future does not appear very promising: subject to continuous growth, the highly unsustainable city with immeasurable and unaddressed social issues barely seems able to hold itself together against its inevitable fall.

Pablo Lopez Luz was born in Mexico City in 1979. He completed his M.A. in art at New York University in 2006.

His work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitons internationally at museums and galleries that include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Fondation Cartier pourl’Art Contemporain, Paris; International Center of Photography, New York; Somerset House, London; Houston Center for Photography; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; Musée du quaiBranly, Paris; Instituto Cervantes de Madrid; ROSEGALLERY, SantaMonica, California; Toluca Editions, Paris; and Galería Arroniz ArteContemporáneo, Mexico City.

He received third prize in the 2013 Syngenta Photography Award competition, Rural-Urban edition/Professional Commission category; the Alt. + 1000 Photography Award at the 2013 Alt. + 1000festival de photographie, Rossiniere, Switzerland; and a number of grants, including a 2005 Casa de Velázquez grant from the Madrid Cultural Council, a 2014 Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Artegrant from the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) in Mexico, and a 2008 Programa Arte Actual grant from Art Salon Bancomer and the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil.

Lopez has published two monographs: Pyramid (Mexico City: Editorial RM / Editions Toluca, 2014) and Pablo Lopez Luz (MexicoCity: Editorial RM, 2011). His photographs have also been included in several books and catalogues, including Uneven Growth, Tactical Urbanisms for Expanding Megacities (New York: Museum of Modern Art, 2014), Landmark: The Fields of Landscape Photography (London: Thames and Hudson, 2014), and Urbes Mutantes, Latin American Photography (Mexico City: RM Editorial, 2013), among others.

His photographs are part of the holdings of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Pérez Art Museum Miami, Anna Gamazode Abelló Collection, Fondation A. Stichting Collection, Mellon Bank Collection in New York, Collection of Leticia and Stanislas Poniatowski, and Syngenta, among others.
