The FotoFest Biennial Catalogue is the document of record for the International Biennial, and is available for purchase from FotoFest.
The FotoFest Biennial is a celebration of photography and photo-related art from across the world, presented in exhibitions across the city of Houston.
The 2016 Biennial marks the sixteenth consecutive international biennial of photography in Houston since 1986. It was the first such event in the United States and is now one of the longest running in the world.
The FotoFest Biennial is a collaboration between hundreds of artists and arts organizations. Participants this year come from over thirty-five countries. In Houston, 130 different spaces and institutions are part of the FotoFest 2016 Biennial, including Houston’s major museums, non-profit art organizations, commercial art galleries, universities, non-profit civic organizations, corporate spaces, artist-run spaces, retail stores, and restaurants. Collectively, the exhibitions and events sponsored by these Participating Spaces constitute one of the largest and most diverse presentations of photography and photo-related media in the world.
The participation of museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Menil Collection, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, along with fourteen year-round, non-profit art spaces and thirty-two full-time commercial art galleries, is evidence of the quality and depth of arts venues in Houston, confirming its standing as a nationally important visual arts hub. Exhibitions organized by Participating Spaces represent the wide scope of contemporary practices in photography. These exhibitions, independently curated by each Participating Space, are essential to the depth, diversity, and breadth of each Biennial
